Walk-In Cooler.
Repair or Replace?
A walk-in cooler almost never breaks all at once. It breaks a little at a time — a gasket here, a hinge there, a bit of ice where ice shouldn’t be — until one July morning the floor is frozen solid and there’s nothing left to decide. Here’s the good news: the walk-in cooler repair-or-replace decision is usually easier than it looks. Most of what looks past repair can still be fixed.
Usually fixable.
Doors are the most common call, and the easiest to fix: doors that sag, hinges that break, gaskets that wear out, heater wires that stop working. Most door service calls end the same day, with the door closing and sealing again.
Panel damage comes next. We cut out the damaged part, forklift holes included, and put in a new insulated metal panel that matches your thickness and finish, sealed the way the panel maker calls for. We don’t patch it or hide it under foil tape. That’s what cold storage door and panel repair looks like on an ordinary service call.
How it gets worse.
A small problem turns into a bigger one. A leaking gasket lets in wet air. It freezes around the door, the door stops sealing, and the ice spreads. Leave a failed seam long enough and water gets into the panel core — the foam that insulates the box. Wet foam goes soft. That is how a faulty gasket can become a full box replacement in six months.
The cheapest repair is the one you make right away, not the one you put off.
When you should replace it.
Three things mean a box can’t be repaired:
- Water inside the foam of more than one wall.
- More of the panel’s outer metal is loose than attached.
- A box that’s too small or too big for the business you have.
When a box is too far gone, we’ll tell you clearly, and quote a new one with every cost listed, instead of billing you to patch a box that keeps failing.
How fast
On site within one business day.
Across New England — or as fast as we can get there, depending on your location. Panels, doors and hardware are stocked in Lakeville, so the part is usually already on the shelf.
Past Repair.
Replaced in a Week.
Berkshire Grown’s outdoor cooler-and-freezer combo in Great Barrington was worn out. It was being kept cold with air conditioners. One of its doors was nearly off its hinges. Behind it sat food that a rescue program depends on.
That box was past repair. Its replacement had two temperature zones in one box, an insulated freezer floor, and a membrane roof — a waterproof sheet over the whole top — built to handle a Berkshire winter. It was set and running in a week.

Signs to call now.
Four signs. Call as soon as you see one — calling early is cheaper.
- Ice or frost where it shouldn’t be.
- A door that doesn’t close flat on its own.
- Panel spots that feel soft or damp.
- A power bill that keeps going up for no reason.
